ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Ann Arbor is the fourth most fitness-friendly city in the United States for 2021, according to an annual study by SmartAsset. Here’s what the study said:With 67 fitness professionals per 10,000 workers, Tree Town had the second-highest rate of fitness professionals out of the metropolitan areas included in the study. The city had 112 fitness establishments per 10,000 establishments but only 7.4 percent of commuters walked or biked to work, ranking Ann Arbor 10th and 15th respectively. This is the second year that Ann Arbor has been in fourth place on the SmartAsset study, and its third time in the top ten. Taking place between 7:30-8:30 p.m. on Fridays, the dedicated swim time was created in response to requests from LGBTQ youth. It offers a welcoming space and opportunities for community members to socialize, according to a release by Ann Arbor YMCA. “At the Ann Arbor Y, we strive to ensure that everyone, regardless of age, race, gender, gender identity, gender expression, income, faith, sexual orientation or cultural background has the opportunity to live life to its fullest,” Ann Arbor YMCA President and CEO Toni Kayumi said in the release. Kayumi said a dedicated swim time was discussed when the Y’s leadership team asked local LGBTQ youth about equity and inclusion programs they wanted at the Ann Arbor organization.

Modifications to the U-M facilities include:Cardio and strength equipment moved to be 10 feet apart; some can be found on gymnasium courts in CCRB, IMSB and NCRB. To get the Cube and other ice rinks reclassified, Wilson has reached out to Gov. The Ann Arbor Ice Cube, which has three different rinks, is used by different ice skating and hockey teams, including the U.S. National Team, Eastern Michigan University hockey team and four local high school teams. She added that Ann Arbor is the birthplace of synchronized skating and its teams are nationally ranked. Wilson said that even before the pandemic, the Ann Arbor Ice Cube was never at capacity because of its size and that several skaters could be on the ice without problems.

On an interactive map of existing and proposed bike routes, cyclists can give feedback to refine a network of routes that will help the city update its Comprehensive Transportation Plan. Routes range from prioritized smaller streets for bicycle travel to separated bike paths on main streets. Those taking the survey will be asked to consider different types of bike infrastructure, like bike boulevards and side paths. Fuller Park Pool visitors will need to bring their own supplies as pool supplies, like life jackets, kickboards and deck chairs will not be available. Until June 15, AAVC members can submit an activity report of themselves Everesting -- a challenge in which cyclists ride up a hill for 60 minutes without stopping. The goal of the AAVCs challenge is to gain as much elevation as possible in a single ride. Participants who enter an activity report through Strava are entered into a raffle for 12 Walz caps. Non-members in the Ann Arbor community are encouraged to participate in the challenge but must be AAVC members to be eligible for the prizesOver the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ann Arbor Velo Club has created different challenges for its members to participate in; however, non-members can still participate in the challenges and showoff their results.

The announcement was made after Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer rescinded Michigans stay-home order on June 1. According to the announcement, structures and equipment at the playgrounds and skatepark are not cleaned or sanitized so residents are encouraged to use increased safety measures like social distancing.
