Ex-officer’s murder trial in death of Patrick Lyoya to begin
The murder trial of former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr, charged with second-degree murder in the 2022 death of Patrick Lyoya, is set to begin on April 28, 2025. The jury, consisting of 14 members, was selected after extensive vetting, and includes diverse backgrounds. Lyoya, a 26-year-old Congolese refugee, was shot by Schurr after a struggle captured on video, with the trial expected to focus on the use of Schurr's Taser. Patrick Lyoya's family seeks justice, represented by attorney Ven Johnson, while Schurr's defense argues self-defense, with Schurr anticipated to testify about his state of mind during the incident.
