Inside Oakland County’s secret drone unit saving lives and fighting crime
Oakland County's drone unit, operating from a repurposed car dealership, has revolutionized emergency response by deploying drones as first responders. The unit, primarily staffed by younger recruits skilled in video gaming, has launched over 380 missions, focusing on crises like suicide prevention and high-risk law enforcement situations. Despite initial skepticism, the program has proven effective, with drones reaching scenes in under three minutes to provide real-time video and support. Currently active in Pontiac, the unit aims to expand county-wide, though funding and equipment updates remain challenges.
