Oakland County man charged for allegedly sexually assaulting children under his care

Lawrence Miles, a 69-year-old Southfield man and former educator, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of First and Second-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct for allegedly sexually assaulting a boy and a girl under his care in Oakland County. The investigation began on May 5, 2025, after the young boy reported the incidents to his parents, leading to Miles' arrest on May 7. Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren, who withheld graphic details and the children's ages out of respect for the family, emphasized the need for caution in childcare and acknowledged the children's bravery in coming forward. Miles, who has no prior criminal history, was denied bond and is suspected of having more victims due to his past teaching roles in Kansas, Illinois, and Georgia; he is scheduled to appear in court on May 22, 2025.
