Detroit’s population grows for second year straight, according to US Census data

Detroit's population has grown for the second consecutive year, with the city gaining 6,791 households in 2024, as announced by Mayor Mike Duggan. This growth marks a significant achievement, attributed to the efforts of Detroit residents, businesses, and city employees, and corrects previous census errors related to renovated vacant homes. The US Census Bureau reports that Detroit now leads Michigan in population growth, ranks as the 26th most populous city in the US, and has surpassed the national average growth rate, moving ahead of cities like Portland, Oregon.
