Michigan court ends effort to sue Oxford school staff over 2021 mass shooting
The Michigan Supreme Court dismissed appeals by families of students affected by the 2021 Oxford High School shooting, affirming a lower court's decision that school employees were not the proximate cause of the tragedy, as the shooter acted independently. Despite evidence of concerning behavior of the shooter on the day of the shooting, legal immunity for government bodies, including public schools, remains a significant barrier to holding staff accountable. The shooter is serving a life sentence, while his parents, held partially responsible for his actions, are serving 10-year sentences. The case highlights the challenges of overcoming governmental immunity and raises questions about accountability in such tragedies.
