Trade Up: Electrical apprenticeship program offers career path without college debt

The Electrical Industry Training Center in Metro Detroit offers a five-year apprenticeship program with IBEW Local 58, allowing participants to earn while learning, starting at $22 per hour and increasing to over $50 per hour by graduation. Julian Johnson, a fourth-year apprentice, switched from a career in environmental testing to pursue this path, gaining experience in various settings like auto plants and data centers, and working on projects such as the Ford Book Depository. The program is subsidized, making it an affordable alternative to college, with applications open from June 16-20, coinciding with a skilled trades job fair on June 19 in Metro Detroit.
