What is ramp metering? Understanding the new traffic signals

Starting June 18, ramp metering will be implemented at eight entrance ramps to I-96 in Oakland County to improve safety and traffic flow. The system will initially flash yellow, indicating inactivity, but during congestion, it will use a green/yellow/red pattern to control vehicle entry onto the freeway. Drivers must form two lanes and wait for a green light to merge, with violations for running a red light treated like traditional traffic signals.
