Michigan M-STEP scores improve overall but early reading proficiency remains low
Michigan's recent M-STEP standardized test results indicate mixed progress, with improvements in most subjects but concerning early reading scores. Only 39% of third graders and 42.4% of fourth graders read at grade level, highlighting a literacy crisis. SOAR Detroit, a mentorship program, addresses this by pairing students with mentors for dedicated reading time. The Michigan Education Association emphasizes the need for more educators, literacy coaches, and resources to enhance student achievement statewide.
