Detroit park project faces setback as thieves steal newly installed fence. Twice.
The Desoto Ellsworth Block Association (DEBA) on Detroit’s west side is transforming vacant lots into a community park despite setbacks, such as the theft of newly installed fencing. The group, led by event coordinator Cecelia Dillard, is small but determined to revitalize their neighborhood by attracting homeowners and businesses. After the theft, DEBA initiated a fundraising campaign to purchase decorative boulders, which are more secure and visually appealing, to line the park. The association's efforts continue with plans to expand the park and raise approximately $15,000 for the boulders, demonstrating resilience and community pride.
