Wayne Disposal, a hazardous waste landfill in Wayne County operated by Republic Services, has been a focal point of community and environmental concern, particularly after plans to receive waste from the Manhattan Project were diverted. The facility, which has been operational since the 1950s, is one of the few in Michigan licensed to accept hazardous waste and includes a landfill and treatment facility, extensive liner systems, leachate collection, and groundwater monitoring.
