Oakland University professor shares what federal shutdown could mean for Michiganders

A federal shutdown now seems almost certain. The Senate rejected a republican stopgap spending bill that would’ve kept the government running for a few more weeks. Local 4 can confirm that on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2025, the White House has ordered federal agencies to begin implementing shutdown plans. About 750,000 federal workers could be furloughed. And President Trump has warned that some may lose their jobs permanently. Essential workers will still show up. But most won’t get paid. Republicans wanted the government to remain open while both sides negotiated a deal. However, Democrats said they wouldn't support a short-term spending bill unless changes were made to Medicare. For more clarity on what this means for Michiganders, I'm joined tonight by Dave Dulio, a professor of political science at Oakland University.
