Michigan budget includes $2 billion for roads, tax cuts, free meals for students

After prolonged negotiations, the Michigan Legislature passed an $81 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year, featuring significant allocations for road funding and education. Key elements include a $1.8 billion annual road funding plan supported by corporate income taxes, gas sales tax, and a controversial 24% marijuana wholesale tax. The budget secures free meals and a record $10,050 per-student funding for schools, while also cutting over 1,700 vacant government jobs. Additionally, GOP-backed tax cuts exempt income from tips, overtime, and Social Security, marking achievements for both Democratic and Republican lawmakers.
