Detroit urban farmers step up as SNAP benefits pause amid government shutdown
In response to the temporary suspension of federal SNAP benefits during the government shutdown, Detroit urban farmers are banding together to provide fresh produce to those affected by the pause. Led by Travis Peters of Green Boots Veterans Community Urban Farm and Marketplace and Amanda Brezzell of Fennigan’s Farm, these local initiatives aim to counteract growing food insecurity in the area by offering high-quality, organic produce. Despite the challenges, the urban farming community remains committed to supporting their neighbors, emphasizing solidarity and self-reliance in times of uncertainty.
