Trump administration seeks to halt SNAP food aid payments
During a U.S. government shutdown, the Trump administration sought to block a court order mandating full SNAP food benefits for November, arguing a lack of funds. Despite this, some states like Wisconsin and Michigan began distributing full benefits, while others, including North Carolina and Illinois, issued partial payments based on earlier guidelines. The administration contended that enforcing full payments violated the Constitution's separation of powers, as courts cannot appropriate funds, and emphasized the need for Congress to allocate additional resources. Meanwhile, officials from various states expressed readiness to comply with court rulings, while Nebraska's governor suggested community support would mitigate any shortfalls.
