Restoration of historic Black cemetery in Washtenaw County uncovers burial sites with radar
Woodlawn Cemetery, a historically Black burial ground in Washtenaw County, is undergoing restoration after being abandoned for 60 years. Founded in 1946 by Rev. Garther Roberson Sr. due to inadequate burial options for Black individuals, the cemetery is now being revitalized by volunteers and community partners who have cleared much of the overgrowth. Ground-penetrating radar is aiding the identification of burial sites, offering hope to families like Randall Luten's, who seek to honor their loved ones properly.
